The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority has expressed deep sorrow over a fatal road accident at Ilupeju Bypass involving a commercial dispatch rider and a heavily loaded articulated container truck, which claimed the life of the rider.
According to preliminary investigations, the accident occurred after the dispatch rider allegedly attempted to contest the right of way with a commercial mini bus, popularly called “Korope.” In the process, the rider reportedly lost control of the motorcycle and crashed into a moving articulated trailer along the busy Ilupeju corridor. The impact of the collision caused severe injuries, leading to the rider’s immediate death at the scene.
Officials of LASTMA, who were monitoring traffic activities around the Mushin axis, quickly responded after receiving distress alerts about the incident. The agency’s operatives promptly carried out rescue and traffic management operations at the scene.
The officers successfully recovered the victim’s body from beneath the trailer and immediately began efforts to ease the heavy traffic congestion caused by the accident, restoring normal vehicular movement in the area.
Following the severity of the incident and the obstruction caused by spilled contents from the truck, officials of the State Environmental Health Management Unit were contacted and swiftly evacuated the deceased from the scene.
LASTMA personnel, working alongside other emergency responders, ensured effective traffic control, public safety, and orderliness throughout the rescue and evacuation process.
The damaged dispatch motorcycle and the articulated trailer involved in the accident were later handed over to officers of the Nigeria Police Force for further investigation and possible prosecution in line with existing traffic and criminal laws.
Security personnel from the Ilupeju Police Division also provided support during the rescue and recovery operations.
Reacting to the incident, LASTMA General Manager, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, sympathized with the family of the deceased and urged all road users, especially articulated vehicle operators and dispatch riders, to exercise caution, professionalism, and patience while using the roads.
He emphasized that unnecessary struggles for right of way often lead to avoidable tragedies.
Bakare-Oki further noted that the recently concluded stakeholders’ engagement with courier and dispatch riders was aimed at promoting safety awareness, compliance with speed regulations, and strict adherence to traffic laws to prevent needless loss of lives on Lagos roads.
