Babagana Zulum on Tuesday met with the management of the Nigerian Ports Authority in Lagos to explore ways local producers and entrepreneurs in Borno State can benefit from opportunities within the maritime and port value chain.
Since assuming office in 2019, Governor Zulum’s administration has continued efforts to expand and diversify Borno State’s economy while creating a more business-friendly environment that attracts investment and supports local enterprise growth.
During the visit, the governor was received by the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the NPA, Abubakar Dantsoho, alongside the Executive Director, Ibrahim Abba Umar. The meeting follows a similar high-level engagement the governor held with the Nigerian Shippers’ Council last year.

At the NSC meeting, Governor Zulum called for the accelerated development of the Maiduguri Dry Inland Port, a major project aimed at bringing port and cargo services closer to the Northeast region.
When completed, the dry port is expected to create thousands of employment opportunities, boost internally generated revenue, and stimulate economic growth in Borno State by cutting transportation costs and easing pressure on the nation’s seaports.
In a related effort, the Zulum administration is also making significant progress toward establishing the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) hub in Banki, the border community near Cameroon. Work on the initiative has reportedly reached an advanced stage.
Through the simultaneous development of the Maiduguri Dry Inland Port and the Banki Free Trade Zone, the governor is pursuing a broader economic transformation agenda focused on industrialisation, job creation, increased revenue generation, and reducing Borno’s dependence on federal allocations.
