As part of events marking the 50th anniversary of Angola’s independence, the Government of the Republic of Angola, led by President João Manuel Gonçalves Lourenço, has announced that it will confer a National Order of Honour on Nigeria’s late Head of State, General Murtala Ramat Muhammed, GCFR.

In an official communication to the late leader’s family, Angola’s Ambassador to Nigeria, H.E. José Bamoquina Zau, stated that the honour recognizes General Murtala Muhammed’s bold leadership and Nigeria’s unwavering support for Angola’s struggle for independence during one of the most defining moments in its history.
“On behalf of His Excellency João Manuel Gonçalves Lourenço, President of the Republic of Angola, we are pleased to inform you that His Excellency Murtala Ramat Muhammed, former President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, will be decorated on November 6th with the Class of Honour Medal, as part of the celebration of the 50th anniversary of our independence,” the letter read.
“This Medal of Honour is conferred in recognition of the steadfast support and solidarity shown by General Murtala Muhammed and the Nigerian people toward Angola’s political emancipation.”
The recognition carries deep historical meaning. In 1975, while much of Africa was still under colonial rule, General Murtala Muhammed made a courageous and defining decision — he officially recognized and backed the Popular Movement for the Liberation of Angola (MPLA). This act of moral conviction came despite intense global pressure and marked Nigeria as a true champion of African liberation.
His leadership not only bolstered Angola’s fight for freedom but also helped unite African nations, frustrate apartheid South Africa’s intervention, and pave the way for Angola’s independence on 11 November 1975.
Nearly five decades later, Angola’s gesture stands as a moving tribute to that vision and courage. The award not only celebrates Murtala Muhammed’s enduring legacy but also serves as a reminder of Africa’s shared journey — a story written through solidarity, sacrifice, and principled leadership.
