President Tinubu Hails D’Tigress for Historic AfroBasket Victory, Calls Team a Source of National Pride

President Bola Tinubu has extended heartfelt congratulations to Nigeria’s women’s basketball team, D’Tigress, following their triumphant win at the 2025 FIBA Women’s AfroBasket tournament in Côte d’Ivoire.
The team clinched the championship on Saturday after a commanding 78-64 victory over Mali in the final held at the Palais des Sports de Treichville in Abidjan. With this win, D’Tigress made history, becoming the first nation to secure the AfroBasket title five times in a row—an unprecedented feat in African women’s basketball.
This victory also earns Nigeria a direct spot at the 2026 FIBA Women’s World Cup in Berlin, Germany.
Celebrating the team’s performance, President Tinubu praised their hard work, teamwork, and resilience, noting that they had once again proven the strength of the “Nigerian spirit.”
“You’ve made the entire country proud,” the President said. “Just like the Super Falcons, you’ve shown our girls that they can dream big and win big. You’ve written your names in history with this record-breaking achievement.”
He also commended Head Coach Rena Wakama and her technical crew for their exceptional leadership, as well as the Nigeria Basketball Federation for their consistent support behind the scenes.
“The Federal Government and all Nigerians celebrate your success and remain deeply grateful for the joy you’ve brought to the nation,” he added. “We look forward to welcoming you and the trophy to Abuja soon.”
D’Tigress now hold seven AfroBasket titles overall and have maintained a remarkable unbeaten streak since 2015. Their dominance began with their first win in 2003 and has continued unbroken since 2017.
As the team sets its sights on the upcoming World Cup qualifiers in March, President Tinubu assured them of the country’s full backing, both on and off the court.
