Nigeria has taken an important step to address a growing yet often ignored environmental challenge with the launch of a nationwide programme focused on the safe collection and recycling of small batteries.
The initiative, unveiled at the Federal Ministry of Environment’s Green Building in Abuja, introduces an organized system for handling used household batteries. These include everything from button batteries found in wristwatches to AA and AAA batteries used in remote controls, as well as lithium-ion batteries that power mobile phones and other portable gadgets.
At the launch, Minister of Environment Balarabe Lawal described the programme as a timely and necessary move to fix a long-standing gap in the country’s waste management system. He pointed out that while larger batteries, like those used in vehicles, are often recycled because of their value, smaller batteries are frequently overlooked and discarded improperly—creating serious risks for public health and the environment.
