This understanding was reached during a farewell visit by Mexico’s outgoing Ambassador to Nigeria, Alfredo Miranda Ortiz, to the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, as he wraps up his diplomatic assignment in the country.

Nigeria and Mexico are taking steps to strengthen their diplomatic relationship, with both countries agreeing to exchange ministerial visits aimed at boosting cooperation and expanding partnerships across key sectors of their economies.
The plan was highlighted during a farewell visit by Mexico’s outgoing Ambassador to Nigeria, Alfredo Miranda Ortiz, to Nigeria’s Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, as he wraps up his diplomatic assignment in the country.
As two influential regional players in Africa and Latin America, Nigeria and Mexico have maintained diplomatic relations for nearly 50 years, steadily growing collaboration in areas such as trade, agriculture, and cultural exchange.
In a statement issued by the minister’s Special Assistant on Communication and New Media, Magnus Eze, Odumegwu-Ojukwu praised the ambassador for his role in strengthening economic ties, promoting trade diversification, and deepening bilateral cooperation during his almost four years in Nigeria.
She also emphasized Nigeria’s interest in learning from Mexico’s success in tourism and cultural development, noting that both nations share similar family-oriented values and social traditions. According to her, ongoing discussions with relevant authorities aim to unlock new opportunities for collaboration in culture and tourism.
Expressing appreciation for the envoy’s contributions, the minister wished him success in his future endeavors.
During his tenure, Ortiz played a key role in advancing relations between the two countries. Notable achievements included the establishment of the Nigerian–Mexican Chamber of Commerce and the opening of a Mexican honorary consulate in Lagos, both aimed at strengthening economic and diplomatic engagement.
Beyond trade, he also promoted cultural diplomacy and supported initiatives focused on inclusive development, particularly those empowering women and girls. He encouraged structured dialogue across sectors and advocated stronger regional cooperation.
In his remarks, Ortiz thanked the Nigerian government for its support throughout his assignment, noting that bilateral relations had improved significantly through sustained engagement and dialogue.
He also highlighted progress in agricultural collaboration, especially under the SENASICA–NAQS framework, which helped increase Nigeria’s hibiscus exports to Mexico.
Describing Nigeria as a key player in global affairs and a leading force within the Economic Community of West African States, the ambassador commended its growing international influence. He pointed to the recent visit of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to the United Kingdom as a reflection of the country’s rising global profile.
Looking ahead, both nations expressed interest in expanding cooperation into emerging sectors such as manufacturing, mining, infrastructure, pharmaceuticals, and the digital economy, while reaffirming their commitment to maintaining strong and mutually beneficial relations.
