In a bid to foster effective collaboration among Nigeria’s Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs), the Honourable Minister of Defence, Gen. Christopher Musa (Rtd.) OFR, met with his counterpart, the Honourable Minister of Innovation, Science and Technology, Dr. Kingsley Udeh, SAN. The meeting, held at Ship House, Abuja, aimed at strengthening partnerships between MDAs to tackle some of the nation’s most pressing challenges.
During the courtesy visit, discussions centered on deepening cooperation between the defence sector and agencies under the Ministry of Innovation, Science and Technology, with a focus on advancing research, innovation, and technology to support Nigeria’s security architecture.
Gen. Musa emphasized the need for self-reliant innovation and the development of indigenous technologies. He noted that Nigeria must prioritize local production and research to address national challenges and reduce dependence on foreign solutions.
He also highlighted the pivotal role of energy in military operations, pointing out that many barracks across the country currently face electricity shortages. He called for closer collaboration with agencies under the Ministry of Innovation, particularly the Energy Commission of Nigeria, to explore sustainable energy solutions that can provide reliable power to military facilities. “Stable energy supply is essential for operational efficiency, improved living conditions for personnel, and the effective functioning of military institutions,” he said. The partnership with the energy sector, he added, will help the Ministry of Defence develop alternative and sustainable power solutions for barracks and other defence establishments.
Reaffirming the Ministry’s commitment to research and innovation, Gen. Musa expressed eagerness to collaborate with the science and technology community on initiatives that strengthen national security and build the capacity of the Armed Forces.
In his remarks, Dr. Udeh, accompanied by the Director-Generals of the National Space Research and Development Agency (NASRDA), the Federal Institute of Industrial Research, Oshodi (FIIRO), and the Energy Commission of Nigeria, highlighted the readiness of their agencies to partner with the Ministry of Defence. Each Director-General detailed the technological products and solutions their agencies could offer in support of defence objectives.
Both Ministers agreed that stronger institutional partnerships will help harness Nigeria’s scientific potential, turning research outcomes into practical solutions that advance national development and security.
Also in attendance were the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Defence, Directors from both Ministries, and other principal officers.
