Senator Mukhail Adetokunbo Abiru, who represents Lagos East Senatorial District, has said Nigeria’s economy is gradually finding its footing under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, as key economic reforms begin to deliver tangible results.

The senator made this known on Thursday in Ikosi-Isheri, Magodo, while addressing party leaders and stakeholders at the Lagos East APC Stakeholders’ Meeting.
Describing the president’s first months in office as a period of tough but necessary decisions, Abiru said the Tinubu administration stepped in at a critical moment to prevent economic collapse and lay the foundation for long-term growth.
According to him, major reforms—including the removal of fuel subsidy, unification of the foreign exchange market, and fiscal and tax restructuring—are already showing signs of impact. He pointed to easing inflation, especially food prices, improved transparency in the forex market, stronger external reserves and growing investor confidence.
He added that Nigeria has maintained positive GDP growth and that increased revenues at the sub-national level are beginning to reflect in everyday economic activities, helping to reduce pressure on households and small businesses.
As Chairman of the Senate Committee on Banking, Insurance and Other Financial Institutions, Senator Abiru also urged APC leaders across Lagos East to mobilise residents for the second phase of INEC’s Continuous Voter Registration and the party’s membership e-registration exercise. He stressed that accurate data and strong grassroots engagement remain key to electoral success.
The senator also threw his weight behind the funding framework proposed by the Lagos East APC leadership, noting that transparent and predictable financing is essential for effective party organisation.
Presenting his performance in office, Abiru said his representation has focused on three core pillars: legislation, empowerment and endowment. On the legislative front, he highlighted his sponsorship and co-sponsorship of key laws such as the Insurance Industry Reforms Act and the Copyright Amendment Act, alongside ongoing amendment bills on BOFIA, NEXIM and NAICOM.
On constituency development, he revealed that over 35 schools across Lagos East have benefitted from classroom construction and rehabilitation. He also noted the construction and upgrade of several health facilities, including 40-bed hospitals and primary health centres, as well as the completion of 11 community roads, with more currently underway.
Abiru further disclosed that the district has benefited from the installation of over 700 solar streetlights, the supply of transformers to more than 30 communities, and the construction of 21 motorised boreholes to improve access to clean water.
In a major boost to grassroots economic empowerment, the senator said 48 cooperative societies were launched in December, each supported with a ₦10 million take-off grant, amounting to ₦480 million. He added that about 2,000 constituents have received empowerment tools such as freezers, generators, ovens, industrial sewing machines and grinding machines, while over 80,000 households across the district have benefited from food support schemes.
Calling for unity and discipline within the party, Senator Abiru urged stakeholders to remain steadfast in their support for President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, stressing that sustained progress in Lagos East and Nigeria as a whole depends on collective effort.
The meeting was attended by the Lagos State APC Chairman, Pastor Cornelius Ojelabi, members of the Governance Advisory Council (GAC), National Assembly members, Lagos State House of Assembly lawmakers, commissioners, council chairmen, APC local government leaders and other senior party officials from Lagos East.
