Barely a day after being sworn in by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the newly appointed Minister of Defence, Major General Christopher Gwabin Musa (Rtd.), officially resumed duties on December 5, 2025, at the Ministry of Defence Headquarters, Ship House, in Abuja.

During his first address, Musa assured Nigerians that the Defence Ministry will fully step into its role in safeguarding the country. He emphasized that strong security requires strong collaboration — not only among the Armed Forces and other security agencies but with every citizen involved.
“Security is everyone’s business,” he said. “We will build on that synergy, and I can assure Nigerians that they will soon begin to see results.”
He highlighted that protecting Nigeria’s territorial integrity remains a top priority, stressing that national security cannot be left to a few individuals. “We must all work together to build a safer and stronger nation,” he added.
Musa also pointed out that the Ministry must remain a center of strategy and accountability, ensuring that policies are effectively implemented on the ground. He reaffirmed the need to continue supporting the military personnel who put their lives on the line daily to keep the country safe.
The Minister expressed readiness to work closely with the Service Chiefs, stating that their cooperation will push the Armed Forces to new heights. He praised the civil service arm of the Ministry, calling them the “institutional memory and backbone” of defence administration. He also stressed the importance of improved training, modern equipment, technology-driven operations, and strong partnerships with both local and international security agencies.
Musa thanked President Tinubu for the opportunity to serve, pledging to enhance the welfare of defence personnel and sustain ongoing reforms aimed at strengthening national security.
Earlier, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Mr. Richard Pheelangwa, welcomed the new Minister and described his arrival as a major turning point for the defence sector. He assured Musa of the Ministry’s full support, promising diligence, professionalism, and accountability from all staff.
Pheelangwa noted that Musa’s appointment reflects the nation’s trust in his vast experience and leadership qualities, especially at a time when Nigeria faces evolving security challenges. He expressed confidence that the Minister’s civilian and military expertise will help drive improved collaboration and foster lasting peace across the country.
Top security officers, including the Service Chiefs, the Chief of Defence Intelligence, directors, and other Ministry staff, attended the brief but significant welcome ceremony.
