As Nigeria approaches its 65th Independence anniversary, the Nigeria Football Supporters Club (NFSC) has called on citizens to stand together, embrace patriotism, and contribute meaningfully to nation building, stressing that only unity of purpose can move the country forward.

Founded in 1955, the NFSC is Africa’s oldest and foremost supporters’ club, widely celebrated for promoting Nigeria’s image and fostering national unity through football.
In commemoration of Independence Day, the club has unveiled a line-up of activities, including an Independence Walk through Surulere, the National Stadium, and Ojuelegba in Lagos. The celebration will culminate in a grand party at its Funsho Williams Avenue headquarters, where about 60 new members will be officially inducted.
Speaking in Lagos on Thursday, NFSC National Chairman, Reverend Samuel Ikpea, urged Nigerians to remain steadfast despite present challenges.
“As a group that has always united Nigerians through football, we are calling on everyone to rally behind the country. On October 1, Nigeria will clock 65 years of independence, and this is the time to stand together in support of our nation,” Ikpea said.
He emphasized that patriotism and individual contributions remain crucial.
“Though the country faces many challenges, the best we can do is to project Nigeria positively and make meaningful contributions in our little corners. Nation building is a collective task. While constructive criticism is welcome, constant condemnation will not help. We must all commit mentally and physically to building a better Nigeria,” he added.
Ikpea also aligned with the Federal Government’s chosen anniversary theme, “Nigeria @65: All Hands on Deck for a Greater Nation,” describing it as timely and reflective of current realities.
“This theme reminds us that every hand is needed—government, private sector, civil society, sports stakeholders, and citizens alike—to build a Nigeria of peace, prosperity, and progress,” he noted.
Beyond the symbolic Independence Walk, the NFSC will also host sports icons and ex-footballers who have contributed to national unity.
“After the walk, we will hold a grand celebration at our Surulere office. It will bring together NFSC members, sports legends, and friends of the club. We will also induct about 60 new members to further strengthen our family and expand our mission of promoting Nigeria through sports,” Ikpea stated.
He concluded by stressing that the 65th anniversary should be a moment of reflection and recommitment for all Nigerians toward building a greater nation.
