By 2031, Nigeria could achieve full nationwide literacy, according to Lagos lawmaker Hon. Temitope Adedeji Adewale.

Adewale, who represents Ifako-Ijaiye Constituency I at the Lagos State House of Assembly, shared this optimism on Saturday after overseeing the screening for the distribution of free GCE forms to students in his constituency.
He praised the Federal Government’s drive to keep young people off the streets and engaged in productive pursuits, especially through education. Highlighting President Bola Tinubu’s introduction of the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND), Adewale noted that more Nigerians are now eager to pursue higher education.
“Mr. President is doing everything possible to raise the country’s literacy level. At this pace, by the end of President Tinubu’s second term in 2031, we could hit a 100 percent literacy rate—tackling even the challenge of out-of-school children,” Adewale said.
As of April 2025, NELFUND reported that over 500,000 students had applied for education loans across Nigeria. Adewale described this as an encouraging sign that will help shape the government’s planning.
He also applauded state-level efforts, citing Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s attendance at the graduation ceremony of 5,300 beneficiaries of the Lagos Skill Acquisition Programmes—people now better equipped to enter the workforce.
“This year alone, we’re giving out 400 GCE forms, along with JAMB forms, because education remains the most powerful tool for changing lives and shaping the future,” he said.
Through his Adewale Temitope Educational Initiatives (ATA-EI), he has distributed over 8,000 free GCE and JAMB forms and placed at least 120 students on scholarships in tertiary institutions nationwide.
“Our aim is to make Ifako-Ijaiye the most educated local government in Nigeria by 2031. With another term for President Tinubu and our party, I believe Nigerians will look back with gratitude for the opportunities we seized,” Adewale added.
