The nation cited the need to protect its citizens, residents, and visitors, noting that the airspace closure follows renewed threats from Iran to retaliate against the United States after U.S. strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities.
Qatar hosts Al Udeid Air Base—the largest U.S. military installation in the region—and is a key international air travel hub, meaning the closure will ripple through global flight schedules and may require flight rerouting.
Foreign air carriers have begun diverting flights away from Doha’s Hamad International Airport. Meanwhile, U.S. and U.K. embassies in Qatar have advised their citizens to “shelter in place,” prompting universities and businesses across Doha to send out alerts and precautionary instructions.
