President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s steadfast dedication to the nation’s higher education progress has been praised by Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister Nyesom Wike, who stated that “The Renewed Hope Agenda has injected new life into our university system through landmark Interventions that are transforming the landscape of tertiary education.”

The creation of the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) has given students the necessary financial relief and guaranteed that no willing mind is denied access to high-quality education because of financial constraints, the Minister said at the University of Calabar (UNICAL), where he was awarded the Honorary Doctorate Degree in Law during the institution’s 50th anniversary and 37th convocation ceremony.
In a statement, Lere Olayinka, the Minister’s Senior Special Assistant on Public Communications and Social Media, listed additional President interventions in the higher education sector, such as the removal of universities from the Integrated Payroll Information System (IPPIS) and the Students Start-up Innovation and Enterpreneurship Grant, which he claimed has enabled young minds to transform knowledge into impactful enterprises.
The FCT Minister stated that universities have regained their financial independence and are now able to operate more effectively as a result of being removed from the IPPIS. Additionally, the capacity for ground-breaking research and innovation has been reinforced by the gracious acceptance for the domiciliation of TETFund Research Funds within the various institutions.
“These bold and forward-thinking policies are undoubtedly positioning Nigeria’s university system to meet the demands of the 21st century,” he stated. The FCT Minister thanked the UNICAL authorities for recognising him as deserving of the Honorary Doctorate in Law, saying the honour was a challenge to him to continue to be a strong contributor to the country’s progress and to uphold the values of excellence and service as a model for the future.
“I accept this honorary doctorate with pride and with renewed vigour to make even more meaningful contributions to the advancement of education, good governance, and national development,” Wike stated. “This recognition greatly honours and humbles me.
