On Thursday, February 13, 2025, Nigerian Maritime Journalists will host the eagerly anticipated award banquet in recognition of the outstanding work of Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, MFR. By 6 p.m., the historic event—the first of its type in Nigeria’s marine sector—will take place at the Lagos Airport Hotel, located on Awolowo Road in Ikeja, Lagos State.

Remember that the Customs CG was recognised as the “ICONIC MARITIME PERSONALITY OF THE YEAR 2024” by Nigerian Maritime Journalists, which is made up of all the associations that cover the maritime beat. Due to unforeseen circumstances, the event that was originally planned on January 16th was postponed. Under the leadership of the various beat associations, all Nigerian maritime journalists who cover the maritime beat—whether in print, electronic, or internet media—have unanimously decided that the CGC must be respected.
In addition to those who are not members of any association, these include the Maritime Reporters Association of Nigeria (MARAN), the League of Maritime Editors (LOME), the Association of Maritime Journalists of Nigeria (AMJON), the Maritime Journalists Association of Nigeria (MAJAN), the Shipping Correspondents Association of Nigeria (SCAN), the Online Maritime Media Association of Nigeria (OMMAN), and the Congress of Nigerian Maritime Media Practitioners (CONMMEP).
They think that since taking office as the Customs CGC, CG Adeniyi has performed exceptionally well and with registered sterling. These include, among other things, national security, employee welfare, interagency cooperation, historically high revenue collection, anti-smuggling efforts, trade facilitation, infrastructure improvement, information and communication technology, and corporate social responsibility.
In addition to this outstanding performance, the organisers are grateful for the Customs boss’s unwavering support of the media, particularly the maritime media. This distinction serves as a reminder to other government agencies and their appointees that the maritime media is constantly keeping a close eye on them.
