Barr. Neya Uzor Kalu, the publisher of Sun Newspaper, was announced by the THISDAY Group’s Board of Editors as one of the winners in the “Young Global Leaders” category of the Group’s Commemoration Awards last night. The large number of applications for this category attests to the strength of the country’s youth, particularly those who are succeeding in various spheres of human endeavour.

The THISDAY Board of Editors, however, reduced the number to a select few. Neya Uzor-Kalu, who was born on November 17, 1991, is the publisher and chairman of The Sun Nigeria, a respectable Nigerian news organisation. She is also the creator and CEO of Basecoat Nigeria, a network of nail salons that is revolutionising the Nigerian nail market. Neya graduated from the University of Buckingham in the United Kingdom with a law degree and an MSc in finance.
She has been developing and executing business plans in several industries for more than 14 years. Prior to being appointed Chairman/Publisher of the Sun Nigeria, she was a Human Resource Manager in the banking industry. She controls the company’s operations, establishes a strong corporate governance framework, and leads the Board on strategic issues. Neya also serves as Sun Heavens Hotels and Resorts’ chairman. She works closely with the OUK Foundation to help achieve important Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) since she is passionate about social issues and wants to empower women.
The awardees, who come from a variety of backgrounds—from technology to music, economics, art, and politics, among others—are known for having made significant contributions to respective areas and for having, via their decisions, positively portrayed the nation abroad. The CEO of Niger Delta Power Company, Jennifer Adighije; co-founder and CEO of Paystack, Shola Akinlade; and Queen of Warri Kingdom, Olori Ivie Atunwase III, are among the other winners in the category. Nnamdi Ekeh, the CEO of Konga Group; Khalil Halilu, the CEO and Executive Vice Chairman of the National Agency for Science and Engineering Infrastructure (NASENI); Abdullahi Bashir Haske, the CEO of AA&R Investment; and Olugbenga Agboola, the CEO of Flutterwave, are also on the list.
Flutterwave co-creator Iyinoluwa Aboyeji, singer and songwriter Temilade Openiyi, better known by her stage as Tems, and her coworker Oyinkansola Sarah Aderibigbe, also known as Ayra Starr, and Tiffany Amber founder Folake Akindele are also winners in this category.
The list of fortunate winners also included Ibrahim Bello Mohammed, a member of the House of Representatives; Senator Asuquo Ekpenyong from Cross Rivers State; and renowned chess player Tunde-Onakoya.
