The NFF technical committee had shortlisted five foreign coaches to lead the Super Eagles, but it was told to also take into consideration a local coach for the position.

The five selected were:
Antonio Conceicao: The Portuguese coach Antonio Conceicao led the Indomitable Lions to third place in the postponed 2021 AFCON, which was held in Cameroon two years earlier. He was reportedly the Super Eagles’ first choice and was still recommended for consideration even after the committee was told to concentrate on hiring a local coach.
Luis Fernandez: Is a former midfielder for France that was a coach and player for PSG. Athletic Bilbao, Real Betis, Espanyol, and Cannes and Reims in France were among the clubs he managed. He also led the Guinean Syli Stars for a year.
Didier Six: Is a former winger for France who coached teams in Mauritius, Guinea, and Togo, among other African nations.
Joaquin Caparros: The former coach of Al Ahly. He spent much of his coaching career leading Athletic Bilbao, Sevilla, Villarreal, Levante, and Osasuna in his home country of Spain.
Miguel Herrera: Is a Mexican coach who formerly led the national team of his nation as well as a number of elite Mexican teams, including Monterrey, Club America, Atlante, and Tijuana.
The NFF has recently revealed they would recruit a foreign coach to turn around the fortunes of the national team, with the Super Eagles’ ambitions of qualifying for the 2026 World Cup in utter disarray following their failure to win any of their four qualifiers.
They also revealed that the appointment of the new Super Eagles coach will take place prior to the start of the September 2025 AFCON qualifiers.
Before starting a new selection process, officials informed SCORENigeria that they anticipate the technical committee reviewing their shortlist first.
