The Wife of the Ekiti State Governor, Dr. Olayemi Oyebanji, has stressed the importance of consistently empowering women, describing it as a key factor for driving growth and ensuring long-term economic stability in Nigeria.
She made this known during the 2026 International Women’s Day celebration held at the Ekiti Parapo Pavilion in Ado Ekiti. According to her, investing in women is not just beneficial but essential for meaningful national development.
Speaking on this year’s theme, “Give to Gain,” Dr. Oyebanji explained that it highlights the need to both celebrate women’s achievements and address the challenges they face, while strengthening efforts toward gender equality and the protection of women’s rights.
She noted, “When women are given access to education, empowerment, and well-rounded development, the result is stronger families, thriving communities, and a more inclusive society.”
Dr. Oyebanji also pointed out that the administration of Governor Biodun Oyebanji remains committed to advancing women’s empowerment, particularly through its Human Capital Development agenda.

She explained that the initiative is being powered by intentional efforts such as investing in girls’ education, promoting women’s economic independence, and strengthening social protection programmes.
In her welcome remarks, the Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, Mrs. Peju Babafemi, emphasised the importance of stronger collaboration among stakeholders, institutions, and organisations to fast-track progress toward gender equality. She also highlighted the urgent need to break down long-standing systemic barriers and biases that limit women in both their personal lives and professional careers.
Babafemi added that this year’s theme, “Rights. Justice. Action. For All Women and Girls,” along with the campaign slogan “Give to Gain,” reflects a shared vision of a society where women and girls have equal rights, influence, and opportunities to thrive.
While delivering a lecture at the event, Professor Kemi Ogundana of the Department of Sociology at Ekiti State University, Ado-Ekiti, noted that empowering women creates a ripple effect that benefits every sector of society.
In their goodwill messages, several dignitaries—including the Deputy Governor, Chief (Mrs.) Monisade Afuye; the Deputy Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Bolaji Olagbaju; Special Adviser on Gender Mobilisation, Mrs. Kemi Olaleye; the Wife of the Ogoga of Ikere, Olori Funmilola Adejimi; and the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr. Dayo Apata (SAN)—encouraged women to continue supporting the current administration’s efforts toward inclusive development.
The celebration also featured a vibrant dance-past competition, where Ado Local Government clinched first place, followed by Ilejemeje Local Government in second position, while Ekiti East Local Government came third.
