President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Wednesday emphasized his unwavering dedication to strengthening democracy and upholding the rule of law in Nigeria, describing it as a cornerstone of his lasting legacy.
Speaking at an inter-faith breaking of the fast at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, the President welcomed members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) National Working Committee and leaders of the Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC). He highlighted that the unity and stability of the nation depend on good governance, and pledged that his administration would continue to protect these principles for future generations.
President Tinubu stressed the importance of internal democracy within political parties, noting that it forms the foundation for credible elections and strong institutions. He particularly endorsed direct primaries, saying they give party members a real voice in choosing their representatives at all levels of government.
Reflecting on his long journey in the fight for democracy, the President recalled the sacrifices made over the past 26 years. “Some of us were bruised in the struggle for democracy—we were detained, we protested, we went into exile. We formed NADECO. I have followed the path that destiny has chosen for me. I am a die-hard democrat,” he said.
He underscored that under his watch, no genuine democrat will be threatened, and the rule of law must guide all actions. “In a true democracy, the majority will have their say, and the minority will also be heard. That is the essence of democracy,” Tinubu added.
The President also reaffirmed his commitment to free and fair elections, noting his personal experience as a registered voter and former opposition member who respected the rules of the system. “I want democracy, and now that it is back, it must function freely and fairly,” he stated.
In response, APC Chairman Prof. Nentawe Yilwatda praised President Tinubu for his visionary leadership and effective management of Nigeria’s diverse society. He assured the President of the party’s full support in achieving his ambitious goals for the nation.
IPAC Chairman Yusuf Dantalle raised concerns about the new 2026 Electoral Law, urging the President to reconsider making the National Identity Number (NIN) mandatory for voter registration, as it could disenfranchise many eligible voters. He also requested the restoration of financial support from INEC for political parties.
Dantalle shared that a film titled “Unbroken Democracy”, chronicling Nigeria’s 26 years of democratic progress, has been produced and will soon premiere at the State House.
President Tinubu’s address reaffirmed his enduring commitment to democracy, inclusive governance, and the rule of law—principles he promises will define his tenure and legacy.
