The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has taken a major step toward strengthening journalism practice in Nigeria through a new partnership with the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund).

NUJ President, Comrade Yahya Alhassan, led efforts to formalise the collaboration, which is aimed at improving professional development for journalists and increasing public awareness of educational projects funded by TETFund.
Chairman of the NUJ Benue State Council, Comrade Bemdoo Ugber, commended Alhassan’s leadership, particularly following a recent courtesy visit by the NUJ delegation to TETFund Executive Secretary, Sonny Echono, in Abuja.
According to Ugber, the delegation sought TETFund’s support for the NUJ’s International Institute of Journalism, with the goal of raising professional standards and enhancing journalism practice across the country. As part of the proposal, Alhassan suggested a joint inspection tour of tertiary institutions nationwide to evaluate TETFund-supported projects and improve their visibility.
Ugber described the initiative as a turning point for journalists in Benue State, noting that collaboration with TETFund could open doors to specialised training, scholarship opportunities, and international exposure.
Echono welcomed the proposal and reaffirmed TETFund’s commitment to strengthening Nigeria’s tertiary education system, expressing readiness to explore ways to support the initiative.
Stakeholders believe the partnership could significantly improve capacity building and reposition journalism in Benue and beyond.
