There was a wave of joy and relief across Akwa Ibom State as the Aliko Dangote Foundation (ADF) kicked off the distribution of 15,000 bags of rice—each weighing 10kg—to support struggling families. The initiative, part of the Foundation’s nationwide Food Intervention Programme, aims to cushion the impact of the ongoing economic challenges on Nigeria’s most vulnerable.

Speaking at the official launch of the programme, Governor Umo Eno—represented by the Commissioner for Humanitarian Affairs, Princess Emem Ibanga—praised the timely intervention. He described the donation as more than just food; it was, he said, “a message of hope” to families facing hardship. “Government alone cannot solve this problem,” the Governor emphasized, calling for more private sector support.
The donation aligns with Akwa Ibom’s ongoing Bulk Purchase Food Programme, which has already reached over 477,000 households across the state’s 31 local government areas. The Governor also urged other corporate organizations and philanthropists to take a cue from the Dangote Foundation’s generosity.
Mrs. Eno Obareki, Coordinator of the Office of the First Lady, lauded the partnership, saying it strengthens the state’s food security strategy. Meanwhile, Mr. Victor Ejiro, Head of Operations at the Foundation, reaffirmed their commitment to reaching Nigeria’s most vulnerable, applauding the Akwa Ibom government for its transparent and impactful humanitarian programmes.
Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, Mrs. Eno Akpan, expressed gratitude on behalf of the ministry, noting that the rice would bring genuine relief to many families in need.
In a show of solidarity, Dr. Uwemedimo Udo, Chairman of ALGON Akwa Ibom, led local council chairmen to the distribution ceremony. He promised that the rice would go directly to the most vulnerable residents across all local government areas.
At the Ikot Ekpene distribution point, the Local Government Chairman, Hon. Aniefiok Nkom, thanked the Foundation for its kindness, praying for continued blessings upon Aliko Dangote. He also praised the community for maintaining order and transparency during the distribution.
Representatives of various groups, including persons with disabilities, were present and expressed heartfelt thanks to both the state government and Dangote Foundation for their inclusive outreach.
The event drew wide participation, including government aides, ministry officials, community leaders, and delegates from the Dangote Foundation. The distribution was coordinated smoothly, reflecting strong organization and shared commitment to supporting those most in need.
