The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has initiated the rescheduling of the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) for 379,997 candidates in Lagos and South-Eastern states following widespread technical failures during the initial test. The decision comes after JAMB’s Registrar, Prof. Ishaq Oloyede, publicly acknowledged systemic errors and staff negligence that disrupted the exam, rendering results invalid at 65 centers in Lagos and 92 centers in the Owerri zone, which includes Imo, Anambra, Abia, Ebonyi, and Enugu states.

In a press briefing on Wednesday, Oloyede confirmed that affected candidates would receive SMS notifications starting Thursday, May 15, with revised exam dates. A reprinted slip seen by reporters revealed one candidate’s rescheduled test for Saturday, May 17, 2025, at a center in Igando, Alimosho Local Government Area, Lagos. The retake is part of a broader three-day window from May 16 to 18, 2025, aimed at addressing the fallout.
Oloyede issued an unreserved apology, taking full responsibility for the lapses. “I appeal to candidates affected by our system’s errors to accept this explanation as the unvarnished truth. I apologize sincerely and assume full accountability—not merely in words,” he stated, visibly emotional during the address. He attributed the chaos to lapses by some JAMB staff and pledged reforms to prevent recurrence, urging affected candidates to remain calm and prepare for the new dates.
JAMB advised impacted examinees to monitor their phones and emails for updates, reprint their exam slips via the board’s portal, and arrive early at designated centers. This marks one of the largest rescheduling efforts in JAMB’s history, sparking renewed scrutiny over the board’s operational reliability during high-stakes examinations.
