Over 160 passengers were engaged in the accident, which happened along the Dambo-Ebuchi waterways of the River Niger in the Kupa Local Government Area. Of them, 24 were rescued, while the remaining passengers are still missing. The IGP has instructed the Force Marine Officer to conduct a thorough inquiry into the accident’s cause in reaction to this unfortunate event.
The goal is to pinpoint the causes and create workable plans to stop similar incidents from happening on the country’s waterways. Additionally, this study will shed light on how to enhance the nation’s water transportation systems’ general safety and emergency response capabilities. Kogi State residents and Nigerians in general are further reassured by the IGP of the Police Force’s steadfast dedication to working with pertinent agencies to guarantee the prompt rescue of missing passengers.
Search and rescue operations have been stepped up with the activation of resources and operational modalities. The IGP also urges boat owners, canal operators, and other interested parties to collaborate closely with the Force Marine Department in establishing and implementing essential safety protocols to safeguard both operators and passengers.
