The Lagos State House of Assembly has instructed Hon. Mosunmola Sangodara, the chairman of its House Committee on Education, to invite all relevant parties and provide a report within a week after some Lagos parents protested the rise in boarding fees at the state’s model colleges.

Following a meeting with the demonstrators at the Assembly gate, Speaker Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Obasa issued this directive. For the 2024–2025 session, which started on September 15, 2024, the costs were increased from N35,000 to N100,000. When Obasa heard the throng screaming protest songs at the Assembly’s entrance during Monday’s plenary, he said he had to step in.
He reassured the parents that the issue will be resolved and urged them to maintain their composure. The House was told by Hon. Sangodara (Surulere II) that the Ministry of Education and other interested parties had previously been contacted by the committee. Hon. Shabi Adekola (Lagos Mainland II) added that it was decided at a meeting with Ministry of Education officials and others that the parents should keep paying N35,000 till the fees were reviewed further.
According to Hon. Gbolahan Yishawu of Eti-Osa Constituency II, the increase was mostly due to the expense of students’ meals.
However, he called on the government to look at measures to lessen parents’ financial burdens and provide support when needed. Hon. Bonu Solomon (Badagry I) noted in his presentation that parents had expressed worry that pupils who couldn’t afford the additional fee couldn’t buy meals on school grounds, which had made matters more difficult. Before acting further, the House is anticipated to wait for the education committee’s findings.
