President Bola Tinubu has announced the appointment of new Directors-General for the National Intelligence Agency (NIA) and the Department of State Services (DSS).

In a statement released on Monday, Presidential spokesperson Ajuri Ngelale revealed that Ambassador Mohammed Mohammed will take on the role of Director-General of the NIA, while Mr. Adeola Oluwatosin Ajayi has been appointed Director-General of the DSS. These appointments follow the resignation of the previous heads of the two agencies.
President Tinubu expects the new leaders to leverage their experience to enhance the effectiveness of the intelligence agencies. He has tasked them with addressing the nation’s security challenges through improved collaboration with other agencies and alignment with the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA).
The President expressed his gratitude to the outgoing Directors-General for their service and wished them well in their future pursuits.
Former NIA Director-General Ahmed Rufai Abubakar submitted his resignation on Saturday, citing personal and family reasons. Abubakar, who was first appointed in 2018 by former President Muhammadu Buhari and had his term extended in December 2021, met with President Tinubu to formally step down.
Ambassador Mohammed brings a distinguished career in foreign service to his new role, having joined the NIA in 1995. His career includes various significant postings, including serving as the head of the Nigerian mission to Libya. He is a 1990 graduate of Bayero University, Kano, with experience in North Korea, Pakistan, Sudan, and at the State House, Abuja.
Mr. Adeola Ajayi, the new DSS DG, has advanced through the ranks to become Assistant Director-General. His service includes roles as State Director in Bauchi, Enugu, Bayelsa, Rivers, and Kogi.
