In a recent declaration, Education Minister Prof. Tahir Mamman reversed himself and ordered the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, or JAMB, to allow only applicants who had completed 18 years of education. At a policy meeting being held by JAMB in Abuja on Thursday, Mamman declared that only applicants who were eighteen years of age or older would be considered for admission.

Participants at the conference criticised his remarks, pointing out that it is absurd for a 16-year-old student to pass the JAMB and WAEC exams yet still be rejected. In response, the minister later agreed with the comments made by the interested parties that those who are 16 years of age or older should be able to apply for admission this year, with the law going into effect the next year.
JAMB deadline The cut-off point for 2024 admission to the country’s universities is 140, while the cut-off point for polytechnics and institutes of education is 100, according to the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, or JAMB.
During the annual policy meeting on admissions for 2024, held at the Body Benchers Headquarters in Abuja, the National Minimum Tolerable UTME Score (NTMUS), also referred to as the cut-off score, was determined on Thursday.
Following the successful administration of the 2024 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME), a meeting was called. 1,989,668 candidates registered in total for the UTME this year. Eighty,810 of the 1,989,668 registered applicants did not show up for the UTME, while 1,904,189 took the test in the six days that it was held.
The heads of the institutions made proposals, and Professor Tahir Mamman, the Minister of Education, chaired the policy meeting that resulted in decisions. Is-haq Oloyede, the JAMB Registrar, who made the announcement of the cutoff scores, clarified that while individual schools were free to exceed the minimum threshold agreed upon at the policy meeting, they were not permitted to fall below it.
