LAGOS — Federal authorities have moved to calm growing anxieties among civil servants, confirming that no employee of King’s College, Lagos, will face job losses as the management transition to the institution’s alumni association proceeds.

Speaking on Monday following an intensive dialogue with the Trade Union Congress (TUC) and key education sector leaders, the Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, affirmed that both teaching and non-teaching personnel remain fully protected under existing Public Service Rules. The Minister emphasized that staff redeployments or administrative shifts will strictly respect civil service guidelines, guaranteeing zero retaliatory actions, dismissals, or punitive measures against workers involved in the dispute.
To address underlying worker grievances while maintaining the framework allowing the King’s College Old Boys Association to oversee operations, the Ministry has constituted a seven-member review committee. The balanced panel includes senior representatives from the Federal Ministry of Education, the Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment, the TUC, and the alumni body. Headed with a strict mandate, the committee has a two-week window to submit actionable recommendations to refine the existing agreement.
“The engagement was conducted in the spirit of mutual respect and the national interest,” Alausa noted, stressing that continuous dialogue remains the most viable pathway for safeguarding educational heritage while protecting staff welfare. Concurrent with these resolutions, the Ministry instructed all Federal Unity Colleges to resume immediate academic operations.
In response to the guarantees, TUC General Secretary Nuhu Toro confirmed the immediate suspension of the strike action previously declared across affiliated unions. Describing the consultations as constructive, Toro stated that pausing the industrial action provides the necessary window to evaluate policy documents and submit labor perspectives to the joint committee. However, labor leadership cautioned that the union retains the option to reinstate strike measures should the committee’s final deliberations fail to reflect agreed safeguards.
