Minister of Power, Adebayo Joseph Tegbe, has praised the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), the Niger Delta Power Holding Company (NDPHC), and the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) for their recent efforts to improve electricity supply and strengthen power infrastructure across the country.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, Tegbe commended TCN for successfully energising a new 300MVA transformer at the Katampe Transmission Substation in Abuja. He described the development as a significant step toward enhancing power transmission capacity in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
The minister also applauded the quick response by TCN and AEDC after the unexpected failure of a 100MVA transformer disrupted electricity supply in parts of Abuja last Friday. He noted that both organisations worked closely together, swiftly deploying technical teams and resources that helped restore electricity to affected communities within 24 hours.
According to Tegbe, the rapid intervention demonstrated the value of effective collaboration among agencies in the power sector and reflected the Ministry of Power’s commitment to delivering reliable and people-focused services.
He said the prompt restoration of power highlighted the professionalism, dedication and technical expertise of workers in the sector, adding that such efforts help strengthen public confidence in the ongoing reforms aimed at improving electricity supply nationwide.
Tegbe also praised NDPHC for successfully reviving the 450-megawatt Alaoji Open Cycle Power Plant in Abia State after the facility had remained dormant for nearly three years. Built under the National Integrated Power Projects (NIPP), the plant is expected to contribute up to 375 megawatts to the national grid.
The minister described the return of the power plant as a major achievement for Nigeria’s electricity generation sector, noting that it would improve power supply in the South-East and contribute to greater stability of the national grid.
He specifically acknowledged the leadership of NDPHC Managing Director, Jennifer Adighije, for her role in overseeing the successful restoration of the facility.
Reaffirming the Federal Government’s commitment to tackling challenges in the power sector, Tegbe assured agencies and workers under the ministry that excellence and outstanding performance would continue to be recognised and encouraged.
He also urged stakeholders across the electricity value chain to remain committed to innovation, efficiency and infrastructure development, stressing that dependable electricity is essential for economic growth, industrial expansion and improved living conditions for Nigerians.
The minister’s commendation comes as the government continues to pursue reforms aimed at strengthening electricity generation, transmission and distribution while expanding access to stable and affordable power across the country.
