The Nigeria-China Strategic Partnership (NCSP) has restated Nigeria’s firm commitment to the One-China Principle, insisting that the country’s position on Taiwan remains clear, consistent and non-negotiable.
The agency said Nigeria has, for more than five decades, recognised the People’s Republic of China as the only legitimate government representing China, while Taiwan is regarded by Beijing as an integral part of its territory.
According to the NCSP, Nigeria’s support for the One-China policy dates back to 1971 when both countries formally established diplomatic relations, noting that the policy has continued to shape the strong ties between Abuja and Beijing over the years.
The agency recalled that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu reaffirmed this position during his meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping in Beijing in 2024, where both nations jointly reiterated Nigeria’s recognition of the People’s Republic of China as the sole legal government representing all of China.
Nigeria also expressed support for China’s efforts toward national reunification during the high-level talks, the statement added.
The reaffirmation comes amid renewed global discussions on Taiwan following reports of a recent visit to Beijing by a United States delegation said to include President Donald Trump and top American business executives.
Speaking on the growing relationship between both countries, NCSP Director-General Joseph Tegbe said Nigeria is looking to deepen cooperation with China in ways that would drive economic growth, industrialisation and job creation.
He noted that China has significantly contributed to Nigeria’s infrastructure development through investments in rail transport, seaports, energy projects, telecommunications and industrial expansion.
Tegbe added that the partnership should now move beyond infrastructure to include stronger collaboration in areas such as the digital economy, solid minerals, agro-processing, technology transfer and export-oriented manufacturing.
The NCSP said it remains committed to strengthening bilateral cooperation between Nigeria and China in trade, investment, infrastructure, innovation and capacity development, with the goal of delivering tangible economic benefits for Nigerians.
