President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to strengthening its economic and strategic partnership with the United Kingdom, particularly in aviation and other key sectors, as British Airways celebrates 90 years of service to Nigeria.
Speaking on Wednesday during a meeting at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, the President received a delegation led by the British High Commissioner, Richard Montgomery, alongside the airline’s Commercial Officer, Colm Lacy.
Tinubu highlighted the long-standing relationship between Nigeria and the UK, describing it as both strategic and mutually beneficial. He reflected warmly on his recent visit to Britain, recalling the reception he received from King Charles III, and emphasized the importance of sustaining and expanding bilateral cooperation.
According to the President, the decades-long partnership between both countries has laid a solid foundation for greater investment, economic growth, and shared prosperity. He stressed that Nigeria remains focused on reforms, especially in the aviation sector, to meet global standards and encourage stronger business and people-to-people connections.
Tinubu also expressed appreciation to the British government for its continued support and investment opportunities extended to Nigeria over the years. He noted that his administration has taken steps to resolve longstanding financial obligations owed to international airlines, with the Central Bank of Nigeria playing a key role in clearing outstanding liabilities and improving investor confidence.
Speaking on behalf of British Airways, Colm Lacy traced the airline’s relationship with Nigeria back to 1936, describing the country as one of its most valued markets. He noted that for nearly a century, the airline has connected Nigerians to the UK and beyond, supporting trade, education, tourism, and family ties.
Lacy commended the efforts of Nigeria’s aviation authorities, including the Minister of Aviation, Festus Keyamo, for maintaining high standards of safety and professionalism. He also praised the Central Bank for addressing foreign exchange challenges affecting international carriers.
In his remarks, Richard Montgomery celebrated the enduring partnership between Nigeria and British Airways, while also acknowledging the success of Tinubu’s recent UK visit, which yielded significant investment agreements—such as plans to support the rehabilitation of Lagos ports.
The meeting underscored a shared commitment by both nations to deepen cooperation, strengthen economic ties, and build on a relationship that has thrived for nearly a century.
