Borno State Governor, Babagana Zulum, has dissolved the State Executive Council, a decision many believe is aimed at giving cabinet members the freedom to pursue elective positions ahead of the next general elections.
The announcement, which takes immediate effect, was made in a statement by the Secretary to the State Government, Bukar Tijani. Commissioners have been instructed to hand over the affairs of their ministries to Permanent Secretaries on or before April 3, 2026.
Sources within government suggest the move is intended to create a level playing field for cabinet members who may wish to join the political race without the burden of official responsibilities. Although the number of commissioners planning to contest is not yet clear, the decision is already being seen as a sign of early political shifts in the state.
Governor Zulum, while appreciating the outgoing council members, commended their dedication and service to the state. He acknowledged their role in strengthening governance and supporting Borno’s ongoing recovery and development efforts following years of insurgency.
He also encouraged them to remain committed to the state’s growth and stability, even as they move on from their current roles.
With the cabinet now dissolved, Permanent Secretaries will temporarily take charge of the ministries until a new executive council is formed. Political watchers say the development could significantly influence the political dynamics in Borno State as preparations for the next elections gather momentum.
