The Governor of Lagos State, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has called on all Nigerians—especially religious leaders—to pray for peace across the nation and for wisdom and fairness to guide those in positions of leadership. He emphasized that through such guidance, the actions of citizens can reflect justice, unity, and the common good.
He made this appeal during the 2026 Lailatul Qadr Prayer at the Lagos House Mosque in Ikeja on Monday evening. This year’s event carried the theme, “God-conscious living beyond Ramadan: A possibility or an illusion.”
The ceremony was graced by the First Lady, Dr. Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu; the wife of the Deputy Governor, Mrs. Oluremi Hamzat; Head of Service, Mr. Olabode Agoro; Commissioner for Home Affairs, Mr. Olanrewaju Layode; the Governor’s Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Mr. Gboyega Akosile; members of the Body of Permanent Secretaries; top government officials; League of Chief Imams; other religious leaders; Muslim faithful; and members of the press.
Speaking at the event through Mr. Agoro, Governor Sanwo-Olu highlighted the power of sincere prayer, noting that even the smallest act of devotion can carry the weight of a lifetime, and that Allah’s mercy descends on those who turn to Him with humility and faith.
He said, “Laylat al-Qadr is a night described in the Quran as better than a thousand months—a time for reflection, forgiveness, and renewal. For the faithful, it is an opportunity to seek Allah’s guidance, purify our hearts, and recommit ourselves to justice, compassion, and service to humanity. Tonight, let us remember our state, our nation, and people around the world who seek peace, mercy, and guidance from Allah. As we pray, let us ask for peace in our land, wisdom and fairness for our leaders, and that our collective actions reflect justice, unity, and the common good.”
Governor Sanwo-Olu also expressed gratitude to the Muslim community for their consistent prayers and dedication to the betterment of Lagos State. “I am deeply thankful to our revered scholars and the Muslim community for their unwavering devotion. Your prayers strengthen the moral fabric of our society and remind us of the values that unite us as one people,” he said.
The First Lady, Dr. Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu, also encouraged Nigerians to embrace lives marked by peace, unity, and harmony, while urging them to pray against conflict and war in the country.

She appealed to everyone to carry forward the spirit of Ramadan, saying, “Let us not slip back into the habits we gave up during the holy month. As we return to our homes, let us continue to pray for peace and shun wrongdoing.”
In his sermon, Guest Lecturer Sheikh AbdulHakeem Lawal of Ikhwanu Muslimoon, Lagos, encouraged Muslims to uphold righteousness even after Ramadan. He noted that while fasting for 30 days is a yearly practice, many tend to revert to old behaviors after Eid.
Sheikh Lawal stressed the importance of maintaining the discipline and spiritual growth gained during Ramadan. He urged the faithful to avoid sin, reflect deeply on life, and continue practicing good character and devotion.
He also expressed gratitude to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu and Deputy Governor Dr. Obafemi Kadri Hazmat for hosting the event. The gathering, he explained, was meant to provide Tafsir and remind Muslims of their duties during the sacred month, encouraging them to remain steadfast in their faith beyond Ramadan.
During the Lailatul Qadr prayers, supplications were made for President Bola Tinubu, Vice President Kashim Shettima, the Governor and First Family, the Deputy Governor and his wife, members of the executive, judiciary, and legislature, the Head of Service and civil servants, as well as for the people of Lagos State, Nigeria, and the wider world.
