The Oyo State Government has wrapped up the final inspection of proposed sites for the Nigeria Erosion and Watershed Management Project – European Investment Bank (NEWMAP-EIB) across the state’s three senatorial zones, marking a major step toward the start of construction work.
Leading the inspection, the Commissioner for Environment and Natural Resources, Hon. Ademola Aderinto, described the exercise as the final stage in evaluating the locations earmarked for the project. He confirmed that the state has now fulfilled the key requirements needed to kick off the intervention.
Hon. Aderinto explained that the NEWMAP-EIB initiative is poised to provide much-needed relief to communities struggling with erosion and environmental degradation. He credited the progress to the steadfast support of Governor Engr. Seyi Makinde, whose administration has made addressing erosion, promoting climate resilience, and enhancing environmental sustainability a top priority.
Reassuring residents of affected areas, the Commissioner said that with all preparatory steps completed, the project is now ready to move into the implementation phase.
During the inspection, Hon. Aderinto and his team engaged with local residents and community stakeholders, who expressed gratitude to the state government and voiced hope that the intervention would bring lasting solutions to the environmental challenges in their communities. He also emphasized that the project’s success would require continued cooperation from residents, highlighting the importance of responsible environmental practices.
The Commissioner specifically advised communities to avoid open defecation and indiscriminate dumping of waste near streams and waterways, stressing that such behaviors could undermine the effectiveness of erosion control efforts.
Among the sites visited were Aborerin Stream in Eruwa (Ibarapa East LGA), Fedomu Stream in Igbeti (Olorunsogo LGA), and erosion-prone areas within Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH) in Ogbomoso.
The inspection forms part of the final preparations before the full-scale rollout of the NEWMAP-EIB intervention across Oyo State. Accompanying the Commissioner on the visit were the Project Coordinator, Barr. Tayo Ayoade, and members of the Oyo State Project Management Unit (OYO NEWMAP-EIB).
