The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) in Kano, led by CN DY Lawal, has arrested 45-year-old Ashiru Bala following intelligence-led operations that uncovered a massive haul of 1,499 bottles of codeine-laced cough syrup.
Commander Lawal revealed that Bala was apprehended at his home in Lambu, Tofa Local Government Area, on 25 February 2026, after transporting the drugs from Abuja. The consignments were destined for a local dealer in Kano, intended for illegal consumption, and were part of supplies meant for the upcoming Sallah festivities.
During questioning, Bala admitted to transporting illegal substances for the past two years. He explained that he had been working in township services in Abuja for four years and received substantial payments each time he moved the consignments, confirming his knowledge of the illicit nature of his activities.
“This arrest underscores our dedication to shielding communities from the dangers of illegal drugs,” CN DY Lawal stated. “Using intelligence to guide enforcement, especially during periods of heightened demand like festive seasons, is central to our approach. We will continue to target drug networks and hold offenders accountable.”

The operation is part of the ongoing “Operation Ramadan Mubarak,” launched by CN DY Lawal in support of the renewed national goal of a drug-free society, as championed by NDLEA Chairman and CEO, Brigadier General Mohamed Buba Marwa (rtd), CON, OFR.
