Nigeria’s teenage tennis sensation, Mofifunoluwa Atilola, has announced her arrival on the African stage in emphatic fashion, beginning the year as the country’s highest-ranked U-14 female player. The latest rankings released by the Confederation of African Tennis (CAT) place the Lagos-based youngster 15th on the continent and second in West Africa, underlining her growing reputation as one of Africa’s brightest young talents.

Born in 2013, Atilola’s rise has been rapid and impressive. Over the past year, she has dominated the local circuit, sweeping almost every tournament she competed in across Nigeria. Now testing herself beyond the home front, she is already making her mark internationally, showing that her skill, composure and competitive edge travel well beyond familiar courts.
Nigeria also boasts a strong supporting cast on the girls’ rankings. Thirteen-year-old Rorisa Jatto sits 39th in Africa, Emmanuella Kwange has climbed into the top 50 at 44th, while Dabira Oluwaseyi completes the list of ranked Nigerians at 134th.
The picture is less encouraging on the boys’ side. In contrast to the girls’ progress, Nigeria currently has no representation in the African U-14 boys’ rankings. This gap follows the exit of former West African number one, Chukwudubem Amasiani, who has moved on after aging out of the category. His departure has left a noticeable hole, placing the spotlight firmly on the next wave of young male players to rise and restore Nigeria’s presence.
As the season gathers momentum, attention will be fixed on whether Atilola can push into Africa’s Top 10, and whether a new boys’ contender can emerge to end Nigeria’s current absence from the rankings.
