Nigeria has taken another step toward strengthening its national security architecture after signing a landmark Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. The agreement, sealed in an official ceremony, marks a major breakthrough in ongoing efforts to deepen defence and military cooperation between the two nations.

Representing Nigeria at the signing was the Minister of State for Defence, H.E. Dr. Bello Mohammed Matawalle, MON, while Saudi Arabia was represented by its Assistant Minister of Defence for Executive Affairs, Dr. Khaled H. Al-Biyari.
Dr. Matawalle described the agreement as a “significant milestone,” noting that the partnership had been under consideration for some time. He said its finalisation signals Nigeria’s determination to strengthen its armed forces and adopt modern defence strategies to tackle evolving security challenges.
Under the five-year renewable pact, both countries will collaborate in key military areas, including joint training programmes, professional military education, intelligence sharing, logistics support, and joint exercises aimed at improving operational readiness.
The MoU is also expected to bolster Nigeria’s ongoing fight against terrorism, insurgency, and organised crime by opening new channels for technical assistance and intelligence cooperation.
Officials say the agreement provides a structured framework that will support Nigeria’s long-term defence reforms, enhance military professionalism, and advance the country’s broader security objectives.
The Ministry of Defence has welcomed the development, describing the MoU as a strategic instrument that will contribute meaningfully to Nigeria’s stability and defence modernisation drive.
