The event was filled with colour, culture, and tradition, and welcomed several distinguished guests — including Nigeria’s First Lady, Chief Mrs. Oluremi Tinubu, CON. During the ceremony, she received the title Yeye Asiwaju Gbogbo Ile Oodua, an honour that speaks to her long-standing support for Yoruba culture and her contributions to national unity.

Some questioned her decision to arrive by helicopter on a Sunday, a day usually dedicated to worship. However, her presence was a clear sign of respect for the Ooni, and she made the trip despite her tight commitments. As soon as she landed, she politely requested that the schedule be kept brief so she could return to Abuja before nightfall — a practical consideration tied to helicopter flight regulations in Nigeria.
Later that evening, as I browsed social media, I was surprised by the wave of negative reactions targeting the First Lady. Having been physically present on stage where everything unfolded, I felt compelled to address the public, because many online narratives simply did not reflect what truly happened.
What I witnessed was not confrontation, disrespect, or tension — but a warm, playful exchange between Governor Ademola Adeleke and the First Lady. Their interaction reflected the friendship they built during their time together in the 8th Senate. They greeted each other like old colleagues happy to reconnect, laughing freely and exchanging light-hearted jokes that many of us found genuinely entertaining.
The atmosphere around them was cheerful and relaxed, and even Governor Adeleke was clearly amused. True to his personality, he added humour and music to the moment, singing and dancing as he often does. The First Lady teasingly reminded him to stay within the programme and keep an eye on the time — a friendly nudge rather than any form of reprimand.
Importantly, Governor Adeleke did not initially know that the First Lady had a strict deadline due to her helicopter itinerary. He believed she planned to stay through the full celebration. Their exchange was simply good-natured banter, not the power play that online commentators tried to suggest.
Unfortunately, social media spun a different story, painting the First Lady in an unkind light. But the truth is far more heartwarming: it was a joyful moment between two longtime friends, grounded in mutual respect and affection.
To those spreading false narratives, I hope this provides clarity. The First Lady is often misunderstood, yet those who know her can attest to her warmth, humility, and pleasant nature. It is unfair for baseless commentary to overshadow what was genuinely a beautiful, friendly reunion.
