The 6th session of the Nigeria–South Africa Bi-National Commission Defence and Security Committee began today at the Nigerian Army Conference Centre, Asokoro, Abuja. The five-day meeting is aimed at deepening defence and security cooperation between the two leading African nations.

In his welcome remarks, Acting Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Defence, Dr. Sunday Attah, described the Committee as a vital platform for strengthening bilateral relations, reviewing progress, and tackling emerging security challenges.
He noted that the last session held in Johannesburg laid the groundwork for the current deliberations. Dr. Attah also reminded participants of existing agreements—the Police Agreement of 2001 and the Defence Cooperation Agreement of 2013—which have enabled joint training, capacity building, and collaborative operations. He stressed the importance of consolidating gains in counterterrorism, maritime security, peacekeeping, and other emerging threats, while reaffirming that both nations share a responsibility to safeguard regional stability.
“Our partnership stands as a pillar of African solidarity, anchored on mutual respect and a shared vision for a safe and secure continent,” he said.
Leader of the South African delegation, Mr. Simeon Dumisani Dladla, highlighted that the talks will strengthen defence ties, broaden training and intelligence-sharing opportunities, and encourage collaboration in the defence industry.
The meeting brings together the South African delegation, Nigerian government representatives, and key stakeholders across Ministries, Departments and Agencies. Discussions will focus on practical outcomes to further consolidate bilateral cooperation in the defence and security sectors.
