Bayo Ojulari’s Role at Risk Amid Alleged Ties to Atiku’s Son-in-Law, Bashir-Haske

The future of Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) boss, Bayo Ojulari, is now uncertain following revelations about his alleged ties to Abdullahi Bashir-Haske — a businessman married to the daughter of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar.
Though there have been whispers that Ojulari has stepped down, insiders say he’s still in office — but likely not for long.
President Bola Tinubu, who appointed Ojulari just four months ago to replace Mele Kyari, is said to be deeply upset over troubling security briefings regarding Ojulari’s activities at NNPCL.
At the center of the controversy is a money laundering investigation. Authorities are probing the transfer of millions of dollars to accounts linked to AA&R Investment Group — a firm owned by Bashir-Haske. The company, which operates in sectors like energy, logistics, agriculture, and ICT, is now under the watchful eye of anti-graft agencies.
Bashir-Haske has a complicated history with NNPCL. During the leadership of former GMD Maikanti Baru (2016–2019), he reportedly enjoyed lucrative contracts from the oil giant. That arrangement was cut off when Mele Kyari took over in 2019. But when Ojulari assumed office in April, Haske’s access and influence were allegedly restored — a move that triggered the EFCC’s interest.
Investigators have questioned Haske over suspected large-scale money laundering, allegedly executed through complex financial networks. This has raised serious concerns within the presidency, especially over the possibility that NNPCL resources may have ended up supporting political opposition.
“The president feels betrayed,” said a top official. “This isn’t just about mismanagement. It’s about loyalty.”
While a public sacking could be politically risky, sources say the presidency is quietly exploring an exit strategy for Ojulari.
One insider summed it up bluntly: “It’s like he’s been working with the other side.”
