asserts that each Lagosian has a job to fulfil. In keeping with international initiatives to reduce trash output and maximise resource recovery, the Lagos trash Management Authority (LAWMA) has reaffirmed its commitment to attaining zero waste in Lagos State.

The Managing Director/CEO of LAWMA, Dr Muyiwa Gbadegesin, commented on the International Zero Waste Day event, which had as its theme “Towards zero waste in fashion and textiles.” He said that the event highlighted the pressing need for sustainable waste management practices and that LAWMA has continued to implement innovative strategies aimed at decreasing reliance on landfills, increasing recycling rates, and encouraging residents to dispose of their waste responsibly.
“International Zero Waste Day serves as a reminder of our shared obligation to preserve the environment by implementing sustainable waste management practices,” he stated. We at LAWMA are totally dedicated to putting laws and programs in place that uphold the zero waste ideals, such as recycling, garbage sorting, and waste-to-energy projects.
However, each Lagosian must accept responsibility for their part in guaranteeing appropriate garbage disposal and environmental accountability if these initiatives are to succeed. Gbadegesin outlined a few of LAWMA’s major zero-waste projects, such as the Lagos Recycle initiative’s growth, the encouragement of circular economy principles, and the stricter enforcement of environmental regulations.
“To make sure that a sizable amount of the waste produced in Lagos is kept out of landfills, we have stepped up our recycling initiatives throughout the years. We are aggressively supporting waste sorting and fostering a recycling culture among homes and businesses through our collaborations with recycling companies and the introduction of the ‘Adopt-a-Bin’ initiative,” he stated.
Gbadegesin said that textile waste made up over 8% of the 13,000 tonnes of waste produced every day in Lagos, and in keeping with this year’s theme, he declared that LAWMA would be taking serious action to alleviate the environmental impact of textile waste. “LAWMA intends to outlaw the disposal of textile waste in any of the state’s landfills. In order to gather textile trash and deliver it to recycling businesses, we will be working with Tejuosho Market in Yaba.
Furthermore, he emphasised, students at the LAWMA Academy are being taught to upcycle textile waste into useful items, encouraging sustainable practices and generating income for locals. The head of LAWMA also revealed that the Authority had kept growing its Waste-to-Wealth initiatives, which turned organic waste into compost and other beneficial byproducts. LAWMA would keep encouraging waste recycling to make sure that more waste is recycled, which would open up economic opportunities for locals.
“Our waste conversion initiatives have made impressive strides. Compost is being made from organic waste, which makes up a sizable portion of our overall trash, for use in agriculture. In a similar vein, our partnerships with the business sector have made it easier to recycle glass, aluminium, and plastic garbage, which has strengthened Lagos’ circular economy even more,” he continued.
He added that continuing cleanup activities throughout the shoreline and drainage channels, especially at Five Cowries Creek and other flood-prone regions, are part of the Authority’s marine waste team’s stepped-up efforts to remove debris from Lagos’ waterways. He reiterated LAWMA’s zero-tolerance policy for environmental violations and called on Lagos residents to support the state’s zero-waste goal by adhering to waste management regulations, practicing recycling, and making sure that waste is disposed of properly through designated PSP operators.
He also said that community involvement was still crucial to maintaining a cleaner and healthier Lagos.
