As part of a prison outreach to celebrate his 50th birthday, author, banker, and preacher Bayo Adeyinka paid the fines for eight prisoners at the Ikoyi Correctional Centre in Lagos, restoring their freedom in a heartwarming gesture.
Adeyinka, also known online as “Greater Bayo,” told a group of prisoners, Nigerian Correctional Services (NCS) officials, friends, and family at a brief event on Saturday, March 29, 2024, at the correctional center’s Catholic chapel, that the outreach was started because it was necessary to help inmates be released in accordance with biblical teachings. Every fifty years is referred to in the Bible as the “Year of Jubilee,” which signifies freedom.
As a result, it is a privilege for me to be able to help eight of our brothers here get their release today by paying fines in honour of my 50th birthday. Bayo Adeyinka, who goes by Greater Bayo on social media, added, “I recently launched two books and I pledged that all the proceeds from the book sales as well as gifts and donations at my birthday celebration will go towards this project.”
In addition to negotiating the detainees’ release, Adeyinka provided the facility’s clinic with necessary medical supplies, like as syringes, antibiotics, anti-malarial medications, painkillers, and blood boosters.
Additionally, he made sure 268 female prisoners at the Kirikiri Female Correctional Centre had adequate sanitary pads for the remainder of the year. Both prisoners and jail staff expressed their sincere gratitude for the initiative. Prior to leaving, Adeyinka advised the liberated people to abstain from criminal activity and “pay the kindness forward.”
Additionally, he offered them each ₦20,000 to help with their return trip expenses. Adeyinka’s dedication to social impact is demonstrated by the outreach, which combines generosity, faith, and helpful assistance to help those in need.
