Through the successful hosting of the “Leadership Orientation Programme: Cultural Inclusion through the Arts” for rural women, the Yemisi Shyllon Museum of Art (YSMA), Pan-Atlantic University, has reiterated its commitment to utilise art education as a catalyst for social development and empowerment.

Thirty-one community leaders from Itamapako, Ogun State, participated in the one-day event on March 6, 2025, which provided them with a life-changing opportunity to learn about culture, visual literacy, artistic expression, and leadership. The project addressed the main goals of the global International Women’s Day (IWD) movement, such as increasing women’s access to high-quality education and training, encouraging women’s creative talent, and advancing women’s leadership, service, and impact.
It was in keeping with the theme of IWD 2025, Accelerate Action. The museum collaborated with two groups dedicated to promoting social change via education and global collaboration: the Educational Co-operation Society (ECS) and Zabalketa NGO.
“At YSMA, we believe that art is a powerful tool for social change,” said Jess Castellote, the Museum Director, in reference to the program’s relevance. In addition to improving these women leaders’ lives, we are also fortifying our communities by empowering them via cultural inclusiveness. Wilfred Dieke, the ECS Project Manager, reflected on the relevance of education in women’s empowerment, saying: “Our partnership with YSMA and Zabalketa in this initiative highlights our dedication to education and character development.
When women have access to information and innovative resources, their leadership is enhanced. We take pride in supporting programs that give women the abilities and self-assurance to take charge and motivate others. “This initiative demonstrates how right to culture and education is a strategic tool for empowering women, and advancing gender equality and social progress,” said Susana Mateo, Technical Coordinator for International Cooperation Projects at Zabalketa, praising the program’s impact.
Because we are helping to create a society that is more inclusive and equal, it is crucial for both us and our sponsor, the Basque Government. This program further integrates YSMA’s purpose of service, education, and influence into local and worldwide discussions while reaffirming the organization’s dedication to social inclusion and sustainable development through the arts.
