The goal of this ground-breaking project is to provide low-income homes in Obafemi Owode Local Government, Mowe, Ogun State, with 3,000 3kg gas cylinders with burners. The Waste for Gas project demonstrates GTCO’s steadfast dedication to enhancing community and individual outcomes. The program streamlines daily routines by giving homes gas-powered cooking, freeing up time for crucial tasks that promote financial resilience. In order to encourage responsible waste management and a sustainable culture, the initiative also launches an organised ‘trash for gas’ exchange program.

To make sure it reaches the most vulnerable, the initiative will be carried out in two main stages. In the first phase, teams from GTCO will visit homes in 12 wards of Obafemi Owode Local Government from Monday through Friday, February 18–21, 2025, in coordination with local government authorities. Beneficiaries who currently cook with firewood and charcoal will be identified with the aid of these visits.

In return for gas cylinders and burners, participating households will gather and return plastic waste. The second phase, which is set for Saturday and Sunday, February 22 and 23, 2025, will focus on tracking and encouraging the beneficiaries to use the new cooking technique more frequently. “At GTCO, we are committed to driving progress, not just through innovative financial solutions but by creating real impact in the communities where we operate,” said Mr. Segun Agbaje, Group Chief Executive Officer of GTCO Plc, in a statement regarding the program.

Waste for Gas aims to simplify families’ lives and free up more time for the things that really count, like education, fulfilling employment, or personal growth. Beyond this project, we want to keep developing sustainable platforms that empower individuals, build stronger communities, and advance socioeconomic development.

The Waste for Gas project serves as a model for future interventions that have a significant, long-lasting impact in underprivileged communities as GTCO broadens its CSR reach.
