Hon. Okey Sydney Edeh, the chairman of Nkanu East Local Government and the chairman of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON) in Enugu State, praised Governor Peter Mbah’s administration for turning the area into a bustling tourist destination and economic centre after the Executive Leadership Retreat for newly elected Local Government Council Chairmen. Edeh praised the governor’s efforts in reaching a $30 billion GDP target in his Christmas greeting, emphasising infrastructural development and sustainable economic practices.

One of the administration’s accomplishments is the construction of mass housing for slum resettlement at Satellite Estate Akpuoga Nike in Enugu, with a goal of 200,000 dwelling units. The state’s Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) has also increased significantly, rising 286.2% from N37.4 billion at the end of 2023 to N144.7 billion in September 2024.
Significant progress has been made by the government in developing infrastructure, such as the construction of 71 roads, a 40-kilometer dual carriageway, a tourist hotel at the Akanu Ibiam International Airport, and the expansion of Air Enugu services through the purchase of more aircraft. To improve security and surveillance, the government has also placed CCTV cameras around the state, covering more than 80% of the Enugu Metropolis.
The administration has exceeded UNESCO’s recommended standard of 15-20% in the education sector by allocating 33% of the state budget on education. Additionally, the government has created 260 Smart Green Schools throughout the state, each of which includes state-of-the-art facilities like internet systems, interactive digital whiteboards, and centres for robotics and artificial intelligence.
Additionally, in accordance with UNESCO’s recommendations, the administration has supplied 100,000 heaters to enhance healthcare services. In order to help farmers and improve food security, the government has also created agricultural initiatives throughout the state’s three senatorial zones. With a goal of 200,000 dwelling units, the administration has set up a mass housing slum resettlement at Satellite Estate Akpuoga Nike in Enugu.
In order to meet energy demands and encourage the state’s energy transformation, the administration has also started a Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) project. Hon. Edeh added that as part of a larger effort to enhance healthcare delivery and provide universal health coverage throughout the state, the administration recently hired 450 health workers to bolster the primary healthcare system. Throughout the 260 primary healthcare facilities in the state, the recently hired employees will serve in a variety of capacities, including those of medical officers, nurses, chemists, community health extension agents, and others.
Another important subject of the retreat was security, with a focus on the necessity of cooperation between state security services and local government councils. “ICT is revolutionising governance.” Digital solutions are being introduced by the Mbah government to assist local councils in streamlining their operations, cutting down on red tape, and strengthening good governance.
In addition to thanking the governor for his inclusive leadership, Hon. Edeh promised the Council Chairmen and Counsellors’ unwavering allegiance to the Mbah government. He ended by wishing Ndị Enugu a prosperous new year filled with long-term success.
