Nyesom Wike, the minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), has expressed sympathy to the victims of the stampede that broke out during a food distribution event on Saturday at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Maitama, Abuja.

Lere Olayinka, the Minister’s Senior Special Assistant on Public Communications and New Media, issued a statement on Saturday directing government hospitals to provide free medical care to those hurt in the stampede.
The Minister stated it was heartbreaking that ten people died in the rush and ordered that going forward, anyone or any group wishing to provide food or money to the public must get police approval.
Wike prayed for the souls of the deceased and fortitude for their families to cope with the irreversible loss, but he also promised that the government would make sure the injured received proper medical care.
The FCT Minister said that the speed at which security agencies responded to the event was praiseworthy and praised the Police and other security agencies for their timely action.
