The Government of Borno State has received emergency relief supplies worth N1 billion from the Aliko Dangote-led Presidential Committee on Flood Relief and Rehabilitation (PCFRR) to be distributed to those impacted by the state’s 2024 flood. Mrs. Hajara Modu, the secretary of the Presidential Committee on Flood Relief and Rehabilitation, stated the committee’s dedication to aiding communities hit by flooding during the handover ceremony yesterday in Maiduguri.
The Secretary, speaking on behalf of co-chairmen Alhaji Aliko Dangote and Dr. Olisa Agbakoba, stated that the distribution of food and non-food goods satisfies the committee’s commitment made during the worst of the 2024 flood crisis. The capital of Borno State, Maiduguri, was devastated by flooding in early September 2024, submerging around 70% of the city. As a result, during this year’s flood season, Borno State was the most badly impacted area in Nigeria.
The water exacerbated the humanitarian problems already present in the area by uprooting thousands of individuals, destroying homes, and interfering with necessary services. She claimed that the N2 billion donation had been revealed by Aliko Dangote, the president of the Dangote Group. She claims that of the N2 billion that Dangote had declared, N1 billion was given by the Aliko Dangote Foundation (ADF) and N1 billion was given on behalf of the committee responsible for acquiring and providing relief supplies to the flood victims in Borno. The committee, which was established in 2012 by former President Goodluck Jonathan, had just a year to function, but with Mr. Dangote’s help, it continued to address the nation’s flood disasters, she said, adding that Mr. Dangote was extremely passionate about philanthropy.
Professor Babagana Umara Zulum, the governor of Borno State, sent his sincere appreciation to the Dangote-led Presidential Committee on Flood Relief and Rehabilitation for their significant contributions to the state. In order to guarantee that humanitarian supplies reach flood victims, the state government established a committee, according to the governor, who was represented by his deputy, Mr. Umar Usman Kadafur. He pointed out that Alhaji Aliko Dangote has continuously addressed vital issues in Borno by offering assistance in a variety of ways through the committee and his foundation.
Governor Zulum praised Mr. Dangote for his steadfast dedication to humanitarian causes and for making a substantial contribution to the state’s efforts to recover, especially during trying times. He admitted that Dangote’s efforts have improved the lives of many people and helped lessen the effects of natural calamities like the most recent floods. Mrs. Zubaida Umar, the director-general of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), praised Mr. Dangote for exercising the necessary leadership in the nation’s humanitarian response.
“Today’s handover of relief materials donated by the PCFRR is a testament to the unwavering commitment of the Federal Government under the able leadership of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu,” stated Mrs. Umar, who was represented by Abdullahi Adamu Usur, Director of Relief and Rehabilitation. Beans, seasoning, salt, sugar, tomato paste, vegetable oil, foam mattresses, guinea brocade, blankets, mosquito nets, nylon mats, bathing soap, detergent, children’s nappies, and sanitary pads were among the things he mentioned.
Zuwaira Gambo, the Commissioner for Women and Social Development in Borno State, expressed gratitude to the Dangote-led group for what she called a significant humanitarian effort. Mr. Sirajo Garba, the Northeast Zonal Office Coordinator for NEMA, stated that the organisation has developed a transparent method for distributing the relief supplies from the Dangote-led Committee in cooperation with other interested parties.
