Demands that Press Freedom and Journalists’ Welfare Be Given Priority The Nigerian Guild of Investigative Journalists (NGIJ) extends its sincere congratulations to Comrade Alhassan Yahaya on his successful election as the Nigeria Union of Journalists’ (NUJ) new National President.

The fact that Yahaya was elected with a resounding 436 votes at the 8th Delegates Conference in Owerri, Imo State, is evidence of the faith that journalists nationwide have in him.
In an announcement released to journalists Friday in Abuja and signed by Malam Abdulrahman Aliagan, the National President of the Nigerian Guild of Investigative Journalists (NGIJ), the organisation said, “As a seasoned professional who has served as NUJ Gombe State Chairman, Vice Chairman of the North-East zone, and most recently as National Deputy President, the NGIJ believes Comrade Yahaya is well-equipped to steer the union towards greater achievements.”
The NGIJ urges the incoming NUJ leadership to make press freedom protection their top priority as they commemorate this milestone. The union needs to take a strong stance against Nigeria’s growing gagging of journalists, which threatens not only the profession but also democracy and basic human rights in the nation.
In this context, “the NGIJ directs the new NUJ executive’s attention to the concerning case of four journalists who have been imprisoned at the Ikoyi Correctional Centre for almost two months due to a cyberstalking case involving the Guarantee Trust Holding Company Plc (GTCO) and its Group CEO, Mr Segun Agbaje.”
“The union must see this as a clarion call to resist such affronts to the press and demand the immediate release of these journalists.” The NGIJ is still optimistic that Comrade Yahaya and his group would lead a forward-thinking and significant term.
