In order to combat electricity theft throughout its network, the Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC) Plc has increased its efforts. IBEDC is dedicated to locating, looking into, and prosecuting those responsible for energy theft in collaboration with the Special Investigation and Prosecution Task Force on Electricity Offences (SIPETO). Engr. Francis Agoha, acting managing director and CEO, underlined the company’s zero-tolerance policy against energy theft and the harsh penalties for violators.

“One major issue that affects our capacity to offer our clients dependable service is energy theft. Through collaborations like these, we are stepping up our efforts to make sure that individuals who participate in these kinds of activities are held accountable to the fullest extent of the law,” Engr. Agoha said. IBEDC documented more than 8,000 instances of energy theft, including illegal meter tampering and meter bypass, between January and October 2024, resulting in losses of hundreds of millions of naira.
“Our partnership with the Special Investigation and Prosecution Task Force is crucial,” Engr. Agoha emphasized, highlighting the significance of the continued cooperation with SIPETO. It not only improves our ability to identify and bring criminals to justice, but it also makes it clear that energy theft will not be accepted.
This compromises our operational integrity and denies us the resources we need to enhance service delivery. Customers are urged by IBEDC to abstain from energy theft in any manner, as the Electricity Act imposes harsh penalties, including jail time.
