At the San Diego Air & Space Museum’s sold-out Runway 40 Fashion Gala, Nigerian-born fashion designer Ugochi Iwuaba, who is renowned for her vibrant ethnic-inspired couture, unveiled her debut ready-to-wear (RTW) collection.

The event, which was hosted by media celebrity Abena Akuaba, commemorated Iwuaba’s 40th birthday and signaled a change of course for her design career. Women’s, men’s, and children’s clothing were all part of the RTW collection, which was a colorful blend of Western inspirations and African history.
Throughout, Iwuaba’s distinctive use of vivid hues, elaborate designs, and opulent materials like aso-oke was apparent. A cut aso-oke suit for men, a flowing silk gown with hand-painted designs, gracefully structured jackets with traditional embroidery, a delicate floral pant pair, and streetwear puffer outfits with African prints were among the standout pieces.
“With this collection, I wanted to create wearable pieces that celebrate the beauty and diversity of African culture while incorporating modern design elements,” Iwuaba stated. “I would wear these outfits every day.
The favorable feedback excites me, and I’m eager to see how buyers dress them. Iwuaba used the Runway 40 Fashion Gala as a venue to meet possible customers and partners while showcasing her RTW line to a worldwide audience.
