The world is currently dealing with the dire effects of climate change, including flooding, severe rain, and sometimes no notice at all. However, as technology develops, weather forecasts become increasingly accurate.
Thank you for visiting The Vestigator, don't forget to share!
This is seen by the annual weather forecasts provided by the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) and the Nigerian Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA). Thus, those who are wise plan beforehand and avoid disaster when weather forecasts are released. Danger only befalls the irresponsible.
A terrible wake-up call came from the devastating floods that decimated Anambra State last year, damaging both public and private property to the tune of billions of dollars. Sadly, a great number of lives were also lost.
The state government is frantically warning people living in flood-prone areas to take quick measures to protect themselves, their homes, and their livelihoods as another round of rain and potential floods approaches. Consequently, residents of high-risk local government areas such as Ogbaru, Ayamelum, Anambra East and West, Onitsha South and North, Awka North, Idemili South, Ekwusigo, and Ihiala have been advised by the Anambra State Government to start moving their crops, poultry, fish ponds, and domestic animals to safer ground.
In fact, Sir Paul Nwosu, the Commissioner for Information, has emphasised that action must be taken immediately to prevent flooding. The Nigerian Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA) and the Anambra State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) issued the most recent warnings based on their estimates of intense rainfall and severe flooding in the upcoming months. The hazards are becoming more serious as a result of climate change-related increases in extreme weather.
As a result, locals should be ready to flee to the Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camps established by Governor Soludo’s administration, especially the elderly, women, and children. Local government disaster management teams are also prepared to help anyone in need when evacuations begin. Nobody will be abandoned.
The state administration is protecting Ndi Anambra to the fullest extent possible, paying constant attention to the welfare and safety of its residents. In order to give flood-prone areas more direction in the coming days, a Flood Response Committee headed by Deputy Governor Dr. Onyekachukwu Ibezim is already working with the Anambra State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA). However, residents are also required to contribute.
The lesson from last year’s catastrophe is now again evident. Flooding is a serious threat, so now is the time to get ready. Residents of Anambra can protect themselves, their loved ones, their property, and their means of subsistence from the impending flood by paying attention to the government’s warnings and acting pro-actively.
Since lives are at risk, complacency is not an option. Compliance is the saving grace.
