The former Governor of Anambra State described the fall as unfortunate and expressed his well-wishes for the President following the incident, which has been widely discussed on social media.
President Tinubu stumbled as he approached his vehicle shortly after arriving at the 2024 Democracy Day celebration but quickly regained his balance and continued with the proceedings.
The incident elicited various reactions from Nigerians, with some mocking the President while others dismissed the significance, noting that Tinubu continued with the ceremonial activities without issue.
In a series of posts on his official X handle on Wednesday, Obi rebuked those mocking the President, emphasizing that such incidents could happen to anyone. He urged Nigerians to remember their shared human frailty and to focus on issues that will advance the country.
Obi highlighted that, despite his and Tinubu’s differing views on how to move Nigeria forward, the incident calls for compassion and empathy.
He wrote: “I was saddened to learn of President Tinubu’s unfortunate fall today. I wish him well. We achieve nothing by gloating about an accident that could well happen to any of us.
“We are all human beings, and, while we profoundly disagree on how to move Nigeria forward, we must remember our common human frailty. Let us stay focused on the issues that will lead to a new Nigeria.
“May this moment serve as a poignant reminder of our shared humanity and the need for compassion, empathy, and unity in our pursuit of a brighter future for our great nation.”
